The sun design is a smaller version of an earlier carving of mine, and is identical in size to the small moon; they are often purchased together as earrings.

The moon design is based on the top figure of a corner post of ginaawaan's house in Klinkwan (hlanqwan), Alaska as photographed in 1922. Robin Wright identifies the figure as "possibly the woman in the moon, a yahgu 'laanaas crest" in her book Northern Haida Master Carvers.
