This design is a very close copy of a rubbing made from a prehistoric rock carving Near The Dalles on the lower Columbia River. A few similar owl petroglyphs are found in the area, and are thought by some archaeologists to represent mythical beings . It is illustrated in Keyser’s Indian Rock Art of the Columbia Plateau.
